Earthquake Torrevieja 1829

2024-03-21

On a day like today, the 21st of March 1829, an event took place that left its mark on the city of Torrevieja for the rest of its life. At 18.15 an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 on the Richter scale took place, recognised as one of the largest earthquakes in Spain, causing the death of 389 people, hundreds of injured and more than thousands of homes completely damaged and destroyed in Torrevieja and in several towns of the Vega Baja. According to documents found at the time, it was especially virulent in Almoradí, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja and it took more than 3 years to rebuild the region.
